Overview

Combined Plunger Energy & Bead Unseating Tester — Single Machine, Two Critical Tests

The plunger test measures the breaking energy of a tyre carcass by driving a steel plunger into the tread at a controlled rate until rupture. It is mandatory for BIS certification (IS 15633, IS 15636) and international type approval (FMVSS 139, UN ECE R30).

The bead unseating test verifies that a tubeless tyre remains seated on the rim under extreme lateral force. A profiled block is pushed into the sidewall at 50 mm/min — the bead must withstand the minimum specified force without unseating.

The IMDURA TPBU60 combines both tests in a single servo-hydraulic machine with closed-loop ARX440 control, NI-based data acquisition, and TelsSoft PC software — delivering fully automated test execution, real-time force-displacement plotting, and automatic energy calculation. Known internationally as a tire plunger tester or tire bead unseating machine in North American and export markets.

Test Procedures

How It Works

Plunger Test (Breaking Energy)

  1. 1Mount tyre on standard test rim and inflate to specified pressure
  2. 2Clamp rim/tyre assembly in the machine fixture
  3. 3Position the steel plunger perpendicular to the tread centreline
  4. 4Drive plunger into tread at controlled speed (typically 50 mm/min)
  5. 5Record force and displacement continuously via load cell and DAQ
  6. 6Test continues until carcass rupture, air loss, or rim contact
  7. 7Repeat at 5 equally spaced points around the circumference
  8. 8TelsSoft calculates average breaking energy — must exceed standard minimum

Bead Unseating Test

  1. 1Mount tyre on test rim and inflate to specified pressure
  2. 2Position the rim/tyre assembly vertically in the fixture
  3. 3Select Block A or B (per ISO 10191) and set the A-dimension for wheel size
  4. 4Apply lateral force through the block into the sidewall at 50 mm/min
  5. 5Force increases until bead unseats (air loss) or minimum value is reached
  6. 6Repeat at 4+ equally spaced points around the circumference
  7. 7TelsSoft records peak force at each point and generates pass/fail report
