Air Spring Testing System

Servohydraulic test rig for full static, dynamic, fatigue, and lateral characterisation of railway bogie secondary air springs — compliant with EN 13597, UIC 515, and RDSO type-approval requirements.

Railway bogie secondary air spring assembly

Applicable Standards

  • EN 13597 — Air Springs for Railway Vehicles
  • UIC 515-1 / 515-3 — Bogie Construction & Suspension
  • RDSO MP.0.2400.xx — Air Spring Type Approval
  • IS 3400 — Methods of Test for Vulcanised Rubber

M-73-ASTS Series

Overview

Air springs are the primary secondary suspension element in modern railway bogies — LHB coaches, Vande Bharat Express, Metro, and freight wagons. They must be validated for static stiffness, dynamic stiffness at operating frequencies, lateral compliance, and endurance life before fitment.

The M-73-ASTS is a multi-axis servohydraulic testing system that applies controlled vertical, lateral, and longitudinal loads while maintaining prescribed air pressure inside the specimen. It covers all test modes required by RDSO type-approval and European EN/UIC standards in a single integrated rig.

  • Vertical static load: up to 300 kN
  • Dynamic force: up to 150 kN peak
  • Vertical stroke: ±250 mm · Lateral stroke: ±100 mm
  • Frequency: 0.01 – 50 Hz
  • Fatigue: up to 10 million cycles
  • Air pressure supply to specimen: 0 – 10 bar
  • Force, displacement, and hybrid control modes

Capabilities

Test Modes

All test modes required by RDSO type-approval and EN / UIC standards, conducted on a single rig.

Static Load-Deflection

Quasi-static vertical, lateral, and longitudinal load-deflection curves to characterise spring rate and operating stiffness at defined inflation pressures.

Dynamic Stiffness

Sinusoidal excitation at defined frequency and amplitude; computes dynamic stiffness and loss factor in real time for damping characterisation.

Fatigue / Endurance

Up to 10 million cycles at design load and amplitude. Auto failure detection stops the test and logs the exact cycle count at first sign of bellow failure.

Lateral & Longitudinal

Shear load tests for horizontal compliance per bogie geometry. Measures lateral stiffness under combined vertical preload to simulate real bogie operating conditions.

Pressure-Stiffness

Stiffness vs. inflation pressure curves across the full operating range, supporting air spring sizing and pressure management strategy development.

Creep / Relaxation

Long-duration hold tests under constant deflection or load for rubber bellow and diaphragm material creep characterisation.

Standard Equipment

Key Features

Servohydraulic Loading

Closed-loop hydraulic system delivers precise, repeatable force and displacement control across static, dynamic, and fatigue test modes — from quasi-static to 50 Hz.

Multi-Axis Testing

Independent vertical, lateral, and longitudinal actuators allow combined load conditions that match real bogie operating geometry without re-rigging.

Pneumatic Specimen Supply

Integrated regulated air supply maintains target inflation pressure in the spring throughout static, dynamic, and endurance tests — 0 to 10 bar.

High-Resolution DAQ

Load cell, LVDT, and pressure transducer data sampled synchronously; stiffness and loss factor computed and displayed in real time during every test.

RDSO-Compliant Software

Automated test sequencing for all RDSO and EN-mandated test procedures. Reports formatted for RDSO type-approval submission — PDF, Excel, and CSV.

Auto Failure Detection

Continuous monitoring of peak force and air pressure; test stops and logs exact cycle count at the first sign of bellow failure during endurance runs.
