LVDT Profile Measurement

Overview

Contact-Based Surface Profile Verification for Automotive Glazing

Automotive windshields are complex curved glass panels where even sub-millimetre deviations from the designed profile can cause optical distortion, impair ADAS camera performance, degrade HUD image quality, and compromise fitment to the vehicle body opening.

LVDT-based measurement provides direct, unambiguous surface height data — unlike optical methods, it is completely unaffected by glass transparency, reflectivity variations, or surface coatings. Spring-loaded probes contact the glass with controlled low force (0.3–1.5 N), ensuring no surface damage.

The system compares measured profiles against a CAD reference or master part, generating 3D deviation maps with zone-based pass/fail verdicts. Built-in SPC tools enable real-time process monitoring and bending furnace feedback for continuous quality improvement.

  • LVDT contact probes — unaffected by glass transparency
  • 0.1 µm resolution, ±1 µm repeatability
  • Up to 64 simultaneous measurement channels
  • 3D deviation mapping with colour-coded visualisation
  • Zone-based pass/fail (A-zone, B-zone, C-zone)
  • CAD import (IGES / STEP / STL) or master part reference
  • SPC: Cp, Cpk, trend charts, control charts

Capabilities

Key Features

LVDT Contact Measurement

Spring-loaded LVDT probes make direct surface contact — unaffected by glass transparency, reflectivity, or coatings, unlike optical methods. Delivers unambiguous height measurement at every point.

Micron-Level Resolution

24-bit delta-sigma ADC paired with precision LVDTs achieves 0.1 µm resolution and sub-micron repeatability — exceeding the tolerance requirements for automotive glazing profiles.

Multi-Channel Simultaneous Measurement

Up to 64 LVDT probes can measure simultaneously, enabling rapid full-surface profile capture compatible with production line takt times.

3D Deviation Mapping

Software generates colour-coded 3D deviation maps comparing measured surface against CAD or master reference — instantly highlighting out-of-tolerance zones.

Zone-Based Pass/Fail

Configurable tolerance zones (driver vision A-zone, peripheral B-zone, edge C-zone) with automatic pass/fail verdict per zone — aligned with OEM specifications.

SPC & Recipe Management

Built-in Statistical Process Control (Cp, Cpk, trend charts) and multi-model recipe management — switch between windshield part numbers with a single recipe selection.

Measurement Procedure

How It Works

  1. 1Place windshield curvature-down on the precision fixture with datum locators
  2. 2Select the measurement recipe for the windshield part number
  3. 3Spring-loaded LVDT probes extend to make gentle contact with the glass surface
  4. 4Each probe displaces the LVDT core, producing a signal proportional to surface height
  5. 5Signal conditioner excites, demodulates, and amplifies the LVDT output
  6. 624-bit ADC digitises all channels simultaneously at up to 1,000 samples/sec
  7. 7Measured heights are compared point-by-point against CAD reference or master profile
  8. 8Software generates 3D deviation colour map and cross-sectional profile overlays
  9. 9Zone-based tolerance check (A-zone, B-zone, C-zone) with automatic pass/fail
  10. 10SPC data logged for process trend analysis and bending furnace feedback
  11. 11Automated report generated with timestamp, operator ID, and measurement data
